The Four Weeks Before October: How to Prepare for Locktober

September is the month that decides October

People fail Locktober in the first week and blame willpower. Almost always the cause is mechanical: a device that was ordered on September 28, sized by guesswork, worn for the first time on October 1. Preparation is unglamorous and it is most of the outcome.

Week one — decide the shape of the month

Before anything is bought, answer three questions in writing. What is actually locked, and for how long each day? Who holds the authority, and what can they decide without asking you? And what is the list of legitimate removals? Our note on the working rules is a reasonable starting template. If you cannot answer the third question, you are not ready for a device yet — and the mental tier, a stated commitment with no hardware, is a complete and honest way to do a first October.

Week two — measure, then buy, then wait

Sizing is where most first attempts die. Measure at more than one time of day, over several days, and take the ring size seriously — too tight causes swelling and pressure injury, too loose defeats the device and chafes. Order early enough that a wrong size can be exchanged before October. Expect to need a second ring. Budget for it. Our guide to choosing a first device goes through the tiers, and Maison Cage is where to look at the practical range.

Week three — wear it, sleep in it, and find out what it does

This is the week people skip and the week that matters most. Wear the device for progressively longer stretches. Sleep in it at least three nights. Sleep is where problems surface: nocturnal swelling reveals a ring that seemed fine at noon, and a device that ruins your sleep for a month will ruin more than your sleep. Establish the cleaning routine now — rinsing in place, drying properly, and a daily inspection of every point where the device touches skin. If your skin is unhappy in a trial week, it will not become happy under thirty-one consecutive days.

Week four — logistics and the awkward conversations

Handle the mundane. Travel and airport security. Medical appointments. Sport. Where the key physically lives, and what happens if the person holding it is unreachable for two days — every serious arrangement has an answer to that question before it needs one. If you share a home or a bed with someone, tell them; a month is long enough that concealment becomes its own second project, and it is the part that most often turns an interesting experiment into a bad autumn.

The last three days

Stop optimising. Set the check-in time you will actually keep — the same slot every day, chosen around your real schedule rather than your ideal one. Write down what you want out of the month in one sentence, and keep it somewhere you will see it on day eleven. Then leave it alone.

What a coached month changes

Every step above can be done alone. Most people who do it alone still stop in week two, not because the plan was wrong but because there is nobody to notice. Locktober 2026 holds the schedule and the record, checks in daily with a personalisation word so proof stays honest, and hears genuine reasons as reasons. Start in September and October becomes an execution problem rather than a willpower one.
